Round One: Mixed bag as Firsts, Fourths and Sixths salute

October 7, 2013 No Comments

Round One saw a mixed bad for Elwood as three teams brought home the chocolates and the other three suffered losses. In an impressive performance, the First XI beat last year’s grand finalists Carnegie South on their turf (a team whom beat us twice last year). The Fourths, under the watchful eye of stand-in skipper and club legend Ian “Reg” Grundy, notched up a great win despite going up a grade this year and the 6ths did the club very proud by pulling off an imposing win in the first game — with a team full of club debutantes.

Unfortunately the  Twos and Threes (both of whom won premierships last year) found the jump to Woolnough and D Grade respectively a  little challenging and both suffered big looses. No doubt they will bounce back. And the 5ths, despite narrowly losing, did the club proud with a great effort to get so close to a win.

Individual highlights for the round include Adam “Howie” Howard’s 54 and 1-17 off 8 overs in the First XI’s big win. Oscar Persson made an impressive 31 in a great partnership with Howie to get the boys across the line.

Adam Green top scored for the Twos on a tough day at the office with a composed 32.

Two of our young guns Lachie Harris (2-16) and Howie Persson (2-32) provided some highlights for the Threes in a comprehensive loss.

Club legend Patrick Reilly proved an unstoppable force with 55 runs and 3-21 in a great win for the Fourths. Club Treasurer Luke Stanley also had a great game, taking 3-18 off nine miserly overs.

In a narrow loss, the two new Kiwi boys Jason Norris (30 runs) and Russell Campbell (3-19) had great games on debut.  Young gun James Fisher (28 not out) also had a great game with the bat.

There were lots of stars in the Sixths crushing win, including a fine 50 not out and 3-6 by Syed Zaidi. SYed Naqvi also chipped in with 26 runs and the father-son pairing of Paul (19no) and Sam (19) Marcolin got among the runs.

Now that daylight saving has started, get down to training and let your captains and/or coach Bobby Chawla know if you are available or unavailable for this week’s one day game.
